During the course of this school year we have discussed many stories that reflect the American Dream. Three specific literary works that reveal the American Dream in one way or another are The Great Gatsby, The Things They Carried, and Ethan Frome. In the book The Great Gatsby, the American Dream is portrayed in many ways. Jay Gatsby, the main character, has the allusion that he can have the American Dream through wealth and power. Daisy is a character that reveals the American Dream because she is very wealthy. Another character Tom, earned his American Dream by receiving money his parents gave him. The Things They Carried is also another form of literature that shows the American Dream. The American Dream can be described as an individual thriving to achieve through hard work, which is exactly what the soldiers accomplished in this novel. Although, some soldiers may have thought their American Dream was over when they got drafted into the Vietnam War, but some of the ended up attaining it anyway. Finally, Ethan Frome also reflected the American Dream. In the story Ethan wishes to achieve the American Dream through happiness with his wife Zeena. He then realizes he wants to be happy with another woman and his dream is met. All three novels contribute to the American Dream in different ways, but they all show that anyone can reach the American Dream with the right outlook.
In the movie America’s Heart and Soul there are many different stories that display the typical American Dream. For example, Ben Cohen’s story demonstrates the American Dream in many ways. Ben was just an ordinary guy with hopes of becoming something more than average. His American Dream was to be successful in the food industry. Ben tried and failed many times with different food recipes. Then one day, Ben and his partner Jerry Greenfield created the perfect recipe. They founded Ben and Jerry’s ice cream in 1978. Ben once stated, “Building a successful business has to start with meeting the customer’s needs, not simply trying to make money. It’s said that doing something you believe in is more important than the pay.” Ben and Jerry’s hard work and determination led them to be successful in the food business. Ben had a goal from the beginning and he was able to stay motivated during the time frame he was trying to prosper. This story is just one in the movie America’s Heart and Soul that shows an individual achieving their own American Dream.
Every individual has a different perspective on the American Dream. The true definition of the American Dream is that every citizen should have equal rights to be successful through hard work and determination. My ideal American Dream would be to first find a job I really love. If I find a job I enjoy doing, then going to work every day wouldn’t be such a hassle. I also want to get a career in a field that pays a decent amount of money so that I can make enough to support myself, and one day my family. My American Dream also consists of a big house in a warmer climate with an in ground pool. I would like to be able to take lots of vacations and travel the world. I think that my American Dream is very similar to the real definition of the American Dream and it is very possible that I could obtain it someday.
