Mao won over peasants with land redistribution.

  • CCP developed a close relationship with the all the people and not just the peasants.

Ex. People had to live among peasants helping them out creating a communist culture.

This converted many to the cause of Mao

What key events during the early stages of the war lead to the emergence of Mao?

White Terror (1927)

  • Chiang Kai-Shek wanted to reassert his authority with the threat of peasant revolts.
  • Chiang, with control of the military was able to purge communist organizations (CCP) in Shanghai.
  • With the successful purge, Chiang established his nationalist gov't in Nanjing, marking the beginning of the Nanjing Decade (1928-1937)
  • Mao was able to escape to the mountains of Jiangxi

The Jiangxi Soviet

(1927-1934)

Mao established his based territory in Jiangxi.

Population of over 1,000,000 and developed his Red Army to resist the GMD.

Beginnings of Maoism:

  • Went against Comintern advise to start a base of the movement in towns. Mao chose rural areas.
  • "Land Law" - in which land was taken from landlords and given to peasants
