Vol I, No. 1

Why did I choose Coke?

Diet Coke is one of my personal favorite soft drinks next to Sprite Zero. Besides, I want to see if Diet Coke really IS healthier since it "has no sugar"

History of the Coca-Cola industry

Background

What's in Coke?

What is Coca-Cola trying to sell?

The normal version of Coca-Cola is just a tasty soft drink. All it is is just a refreshing drink after a long day. Campaigns such as "Share a Coke with-" and "Open happiness" just try and sell a nice drink that supposedly makes the comsumer happy, with no actual attention to health benefits and stuff like that.

What is Diet Coke trying to sell?

Diet Coke is the sugar-free version of Coca-Cola. The Coca-Cola company is trying to appeal to the consumers on diets and whatnot. This version of Coke still gives you a caffeine boost if necessary, yet still is supposedly healthier because it has no actual sugar, so your teeth don't rot.

Coke was created by an Atlanta pharmacist named Dr. John S. Pemberton. He created a flavored chocolate syrup, and took it to his neighbor, who, after adding in carbonated water, proclaimed it delicious. Pemberton began selling it for money. His book keeper, Frank M. Robinson, gave it the name "Coca-Cola" and the trademark we know today. Pemberton died two years later, and gave the business to a businessman down in Atlanta, named Mr. Candler. The business expanded beyond Atlanta by 1894, and kept on growing. The first marketing efforts were through coupons in 1887. In 1993, the polar bears were created in a series of animated ads. The "open happiness" slogan didn't come into existance until 2009.

Is the claim about Diet Coke true?

In comparison to Coke...

The truth revealed

The final tally

All will be told

There is no actual sugar, so that is a benefit. However, there is no protein in Diet Coke, and protein is a necessity. Also, there appears to be no Calcium, Vitamin A and C, nor any Fiber. So, while Diet Coke is sugar-free, some other essentials are missing. On another upside, there is no fat.

So, according to this nutrition label for Coke, even though it is slightly blurred, I can tell that it had precisely 65 grams of sugar. Both of these bottles are the same size, so this one DEFINITELY has more sugar per serving. Also, while the Diet had 70g of sodium, regular Coke has 75g of sodium. Finally, Diet Coke has no carbs in contrast to 65g of carbs in regular Coke. Everything else is the same: no protein, no vitamins. So, in conclusion, what Coke says is actually true: Diet Coke IS healthier than regular Coke. So drink Diet, like me! Neither drink has any real health benefits, but diet is healthier to choose rather than regular, and it still tastes good! (Side note: Diet Caffeine free is healthier, but not as good as Diet in my opinion)
