African American Education

Very few enslaved African American were able to read and write. Laws exsisted in many placxes in the South prohibiting educationg African Americans.

Not many African American schools exsisted.

The Role of Teachers

At the beginning of the American Common School Period, the country was still primarily rural.

Most children were educated at home or small school houses.

Because of Horace Manns's imapact on education, techers trained in normal schools were better prepared to teach.

The McGuffey Readers

Textbooks became much more widley avalible during the American Common School Period. Reverned William Holmes McGuffery was askd to write a textbook.

That was the beginning of the McGuffey readers, a series of books that were used in schools around the country.

McGuffey readers taught alot of subjects including history, biology, botany, literature, and speech, along with lessons on proper behavior.

The American Common School Period in education extened from 1840-1880.

Horace Mann was the first secretary of the State Board of EDucation in Massachusetts.

The American Common School Period brought more cahnge in how subjects were taught than in which subjects were taught.

Significant changes included the establishment of kindergartens in public schools, the use of McGuffey readers, and the passing of the Morill Act of 1852.
