Even before World War 2 began, Australia had enough experience from World War 1 to be better prepared in the case of another war. Unlike the first time, however, there was not much of an encouragement to enlist in the army, as the government learned that taking people from essential jobs was detrimental to the country's wellbeing. However, the government proceeded slower than the government that we have today.

Australia's economy improved in WW2, allowing more jobs and getting out of the Great Depression. During the war, the government tried to preserve the economy by promoting a season of austerity. Taxes were raised and people were encouraged to spend less and save money for the war effort.
The war gave birth to Australia's stong alliance with the USA. It also affected Australia's interaction with other nations, and the efforts of the government earnt themselves a spot in the United Nations
Due to the war, Australia adopted a period of censorship, preventing vital information from falling into enemy hands, but also depriving their own citizens of news. The government at this point controlled a significant portion of the citizens lives, more than they had in Australian history.

After the end of World War 2, the Australian government was freed from wartime conditions. There was no longer a need for censorship, rationing, conscription and the presence of American soldiers. Life in Australia went back to as normal as a country can be after a major war.

All the citizens of Australia were impacted in some way by the choices of the government during the war. One example of this were people with links to enemy countries, who were placed in internment camps. Australian citizens also had large sanctions imposed upon them by the government to encourage them to place their money in support of the war effort. This period was called the 'season of austerity' by Curtin.

When World War 2 began, Prime Minister Robert Menzies quickly rushed to the support of Britain against Germany. Other then a declaration of support, Australian troops didn't see much action and life at home went on as usual. It was only until the Japanese became a true threat to Australian life that the government took a more hands on approach to the war.
By taking a more direct approach in managing Australia's affairs, the government was able to ensure that Australia was kept stable through the course of the war. The decisive choices made by the Australian government allowed Australia to repel the Japanese attacks in the Asia-Pacific.
During World War 2, Australian life was drastically changed forever. For the first time, the decisions of the Australian government had more of an impact on Australian citizens than it ever had before.

During World War 2, there were two prime ministers in Australia. There was Robert Menzies of the United Australia Party, who declared war on Germany in support of Britain, and Labor Prime Minister John Curtin, who saw Australia through the end of the war. Another important figure in Australian politics at this time was Ben Chifley, the Treasurer, who would later become Prime minister after Curtin.
After World War 2 was finished. Australia had begun a period of rebuilding. Darwin would need to be rebuilt after the bombings, and the return of soldiers would see more work being able to be done. For the first time, women were a part of the Australian workforce. In time, the Australian economy would also emerge from the costs of the war effort.
