Video Clip: Reading with Joshua

Fine Motor SKill

By analyzing Joshua's writing sample, it is evident that he is in the Early Phonemic Stage specifically centered on the awareness of environmental print. Joshua is able to write his name, the word "dad," the alphabet and extra letters by copying them from previous works he had completed. When asked to write his name without looking at a visual, he struggles and spells his name with different letters; such as, "JOSYA."

Block Play Experience

In this picture Joshua exercises his fine motor skills by using different markers to color onto a coloring page. Before he began working on the coloring page, he placed stickers onto the paper and said, "the bunny is carrying a flower and a egg on the stick now." Joshua also added that he needs "to add colors on the bunny's dress to make her pretty." To begin his activity, he first chooses the markers he wants to use then holds the marker with his right hand and holds the cap on his left hand (as shown in the picture). Once he has the marker held with his dominant hand, he begins to use the marker to color the coloring page. At this time he begins saying the colors of the markers as he works on the page; such as, "verde" for the green marker and "rosa" for pink. This picture shows one of the many ways that Joshua exercises his fine motor skills; he shows this through using markers onto the coloring page.

In this picture, Joshua is exercising his gross motor skills with his brother and close relative through running after a soccer ball and kicking it. Through this experience, Joshua constantly ran after the ball, playing against his older brother, who has dominated the game for the first 5 minutes. Joshua used his legs to run after his brother and attempted to kick the ball and also his brother's legs as well. Joshua kept his composure throughout this exercise by following after his brother, but he kept yelling, "Mine! Mine! Mine!" By repeating the word, "mine," Joshua shows signs of autonomy through the way he says the soccer ball is his. He also attempted to reach for the ball with his hands once the ball got close to him.

Joshua's older brother

Joshua's close relative

As shown in this picture, Joshua poses with a motorized four-wheeler toy behind a LEGO structure he made. Before this picture was taken, Joshua's older siblings taught Joshua how to stack the LEGOs in a way to make a staircase. Once Joshua tried to stack the LEGOs on his own, he created this structure. He described it as a "tower with a store and a stairs for LEGO man to go up and up with his car." As Joshua got a hold of stacking the LEGOs he began to stack more and more LEGO pieces on top of his original "tower." The block experience allows children, like Joshua, to exercise fine motor skills as well as cognitive skills through learning how to properly build a stable structure.

Loreen (Me): "After observing Joshua through a short period of time and accompanying him through his learning development and growth, this is the completed portfolio of your child based on my observation. I would appreciate any feedback or extra comments you would like to share about this portfolio.

Joshua's mother: I honestly and truly appreciate this portfolio of Joshua and especially the work you've put into it. I wish my son's school would do this for him, you see, he's in a HeadStart program and I feel somewhat disconnected to my son's growth in learning. I know that he is learning in school, but I rarely see the evidence of the progress he has made. Having this portfolio or any source of documentation allows and helps me as a parent to understand the development of my child as a student and as an individual.

Joshua's sister

This picture was taken as Joshua exercises his cognitive skills through reading a Spanish animal book titled, "Animal World (Spanish Edition)" by Karen Wallace. Through Joshua's time spent with the book, he pointed out various animals; such as, monkey, butterfly, and tiger. As he turned the page and saw a certain animal, he would say what animal it was and add his own made up ad-lib commentary. An incident during this experience where he demonstrates this, would be when he turned the page and it consisted of a picture of a gorilla,

Joshua said, "ooh monkey...a la parra er..."

Although the book was written in

Spanish, Joshua identified the animals in

English; he was able to practice his cog-

nitive skills through following the book

and recognizing the animals.

In this picture, Joshua and his sister are playing school. Joshua's older sister plays the teacher while Joshua plays the student. In their pretend classroom, Joshua's older sister demonstrates a way to connect the pegs to the blocks which then may be able to be attached to a larger peg with bigger holes; Joshua then imitated his sister by sticking the pegs into the blocks. During this experience, Joshua raised his hand multiple times and waved to his sister to get her attention; he did this while repeating, "teacher, teacher, teacher." Once Joshua's sister called on Joshua by asking, "Yes, Joshua?" He asked, "Teacher, can you please help me with the stick on the square?" Through this exchange, both Joshua and his sister participated in pretend/dramatic play which allowed both children to exercise imagination, cooperation, and creativity.

In this picture, Joshua, his relatives, and his siblings just finished a game of soccer; once they finished, they posed for this picture, each demonstrating a range of emotions. Joshua, as seen in this photo, stands with one of his hands out, his hair dripping with sweat, looking into the camera. Before this picture was taken, Joshua lost the game of soccer against his brother and his relative; due to the result of the game, Joshua began running after his brother and relative and attempted to kick them. While Joshua ran after them he said, "I'm going to win you next time, I'm gonna be bigger." As Joshua said this, he turned to me, the recorder, and began saying, "I'm going to win them next time." With this experience of participating in a competitive game of soccer, Joshua displayed an eagerness to win which shows development in his social emotional growth through showing a sense of willingness to compete and win the next time he plays with his brother and relative.
