EMPATHY

SAY

"I was told that because my degree was in IT, I could very easily get a job with a high pay rate. And then I graduated, and saw the reality of it."

"Even though computers and technology are in high demand, you have to have a specialty. In order to have a specialty, you have to have certifications."

"That left me kind of sad about the situation."

"Took it upon myself to research specialties."

"After graduating, I did it in reverse….I looked up the amount of money I wanted to make, looked up the job title, then researched how to get it."

"I was told getting the degree automatically qualified you for the job, but that's not how the real world is."

"Schools should offer some sort of workforce development or job placement help before you get out of school."

"No one is an expert in anything."

"You don't necessarily need to go to school to be successful, but going to school prepares you to be a better professional."

"If you want to be recognized as a professional inside and out, and you want to be confident, you should go to school."

"Because I taught myself something before, I know I can teach myself something new now. "

"That's another plus of going to school. Whether you finish school, or you don't finish school, from being in college, you learn how to take a book, you look in that book and you learn how to use the information you need from that book."

THINK

Students could benefit greatly from better guidance given by school counselors and professors.

Students could benefit from having a realistic vs. optimistic view of what the future really holds for graduates.

Many graduates are promised one thing but receive something totally different.

Schools could better prepare students for the real world by focusing on specialties as oppose to degrees in general.

Schools prepare you professionally, but they do not prepare you mentally and emotionally for the struggles of finding a job after college.

FEEL

Sad, disappointed, lied to about the prospects of finding a career after finishing school.

Confident in abilities resulting from successfully completing rigorous coursework.

Driven to succeed regardless of what it takes.

Willing to adapt to meet the needs of expectations set by preferred industry for success.

Despite what anyone tells you, success takes hard work.

PROBLEM STATEMENT:

A young, driven, creative IT professional, full of spunk, who currently has a bachelor's in Computer Science and two industry certifications, and will soon begin classes to obtain her master's degree needs a better way to prepare herself for a career in the IT industry because success in that industry typically requires more than just a degree.
