This is not a story where the hero comes out on top. This is the story where Orpheus loses the love of his life Eurydice. He wanders Thrace sobbing over his wife. Then one day the Maenads see Orpheus and rip him limb from limb. This could be interpreted as the reward because he gets his wish. To be with Eurydice.
Orpheus didn't know what to do with his self at first. He whined all around Thrace Playing his Lyre.
Orpheus and Eurydice travel towards the upper world. Orpheus can hear the footsteps of his wife but wasn't positive she was there.
Right after their wedding Eurydice walked ito a meadow where she was bit by a snake and died. Orpheus was so overwhelmed with grief it lead him on a journey, to the Underworld

Orpheus has to cross three thresholds. First he has to get to the cave that is a portal from Earth to the Underworld. Then he has to cross the River of Styx, the threshold between the living and the dead. Finally Orpheus has to cross the gates of Hell which are guarded by Cerberus, the three headed dog.
Finally Orpheus finds Hades and Persephone in Hades' palace deep in the Underworld.
As Orpheus searches for the rulers of the underworld, Hades and Persephone, he passes by the sad and the angry people in the Underworld. His music though, his music soothed all including Cerberus. Meaning he calmed all shades, made the Furies weep, makes Sisyphus on sit on his rock, and distracted the vultures from eating the liver of Tityus.
