The Arabian Oryx

Why is the Arabian Oryx Endangered?

What Does 'Endangered' Mean

Endangered refers to a species which are in risk of extinction

  • The Arabian Oryx are endangered because they are poached for their beautiful horns, their sun-reflecting hide and their meat

  • Hunters illegally trade the horns of the Arabian Oryx and their hide

  • The Arabian Oryx are hunted by carnivores according to the food chain

  • As the population grows bigger the desert is being destroyed creating less space for the home of the Arabian Oryx

About the Arabian Oryx

The Arabian Oryx is a desert animal and is similar to a gazelle. The Arabian Oryx always stay in groups and tend to dislike the other groups. Sometimes the male Oryx fight each other to gain the love of a female Oryx.

We Are Helping!

  • In the IUCN Red List the Arabian Oryx used to be classified as endangered then extinct in the wild and now, because of people's efforts, it is classified as vulnerable

  • Many conservation centers have worked hard to make sure the Arabian Oryx wouldn't go extinct a second time

  • A great example is the sanctuary at Bani Yas Island, this sanctuary has bred many Arabian Oryx and most of them, hopefully, roam in the wild, nowadays you can still see many Arabian Oryx there
