How are child soldiers recruited?

Child soldiers are recruited through various means. Often armies recruiting child soldiers do so by separating them from their parents. After the child is separated and has no where else to go, they will be stuck with no choice but to serve the army. Once in the army, it is very difficult for a child to escape, let alone survive on its own afterwards.

What are the child's duties?

The duties of child soldiers all depend on the armies recruiting them and their genders. Usually male child soldiers are sent out as mercenaries, spies, messengers, human mine detectors. human shields and cooks. Often girls are used as "wives" to the older soldiers. The boys and girls both suffer extreme sexual, physical, and verbal abuse.

How killing affects these children

How are the children treated?

Children who have escaped the forces that they were unwillingly fought for describe their experiences. Translating from a child soldier to a civilian is very hard for the children. A child soldier who escaped tells his story.

- Often the children are emotionally scarred from the separation of their parents.

- Hatred and anger

- No sense of safety or permanence

- No one to return too

- No one is there for them.

- Some are treated as if a lower being

- Often forced to march or work for long hours with no breaks and no food/water

- No love
