After a couple of court messengers disrupt a meeting in Umuofia and say it must end, Okonkwo becomes angry and beheads a man. Although, the tribe is astonished and decides not to go to war.
After a settlement with a neighboring tribe due to a death of a fellow clan member, Umuofia receives a virgin and a fifteen-year-old boy named Ikemefuna. Okonkwo takes hold of Ikemefuna and cares for him like a father.
Mr.Brown grows ill and is replaced by Mr.Smith, a strict and intolerant man. He releases the ardent converts restrained by Mr.Brown. In effect, this causes one of the converts, named Enoch, to unmask an ancestral spirit of the tribe during an annual ceremony of honoring the earth deity.
During his second year of exile in Mbanta, Obierika visits Okonkwo and tells him that a neighboring village, Abame, has been attacked by white people. Obierika is also notified that Nwoye, Okonkwo's first son, has abandoned Okonkwo and his family to support the white people and their customs.
Okonkwo is notified by one of the elders of the tribe that the Oracle has said Ikemefuna must be killed. Walking through a simple path in the forest, Ikemefuna is killed by Okonkwo as a representation of strength and not weakness. He is filled with guilt and depression for a couple of days.
