History and facts about King Ur-Nammu

  • Ur-Nammu (reigned 2047-2030 BCE) was the founder of The Third Dynasty of Ur in Sumer.
  • He is best known as the king who composed the first complete law of The Code of Ur-Nammu.
  • The Code of Ur-Nammu assumed a universal understanding on the part of the people that law descended from gods.

King Ur-Nammu's figurine

Height: 27.3 cm

  • The figurine was found buried in a foundation box buried beneath one of the temple towers.
  • It was one of the duties of a Mesopotamian king to care for the gods and restore or rebuild their temples.

Culture: Neo-Sumerian

On this figure the king wears a skirt that has engraved symbols in it meaning " To Inanna the lady of Eanna, his lady, Ur-Nammu the mighty king, king of Ur, king of Sumer and Akkad, her temple he built, to its place he restored it"

  • This figurine represents King Ur-Nammu lifting a large basket of earth for making bricks.
  • This act is a record for prosperity and to receive the god's blessing.

Ur-Nammu is also credited as the builder the builder of the Great Ziggurat of Ur
