Intensity

Book

  • Chyna Shepherd
  • Edgler Foreman Vess (known as Vess in the book)
  • Ariel Delane

Chyna comes home from college with her best friend, Laura. While staying there, a murderer, Vess, comes and rapes Laura and kills her entire family. Chyna is the only one left to survive, and while trying to get Laura back, she ends up on the road with the killer. While stopping at a gas station, and after Vess kills 2 more people, she manages to escape, but then decides that Vess needs to be punished for killing her best friend and her family. She also finds out about Ariel in the gas station and wants to save her. She decides to chase after Vess with the mission to kill him. He ends up finding her when she sneaks into his house and plans on killing her, until she escapes with Ariel while he is at work. He finds them driving away and as their cars crash, gasoline spills and Chyna uses a lighter to set Vess on fire, which burns him alive. The book ends with Chyna becoming Ariel's guardian.

Movie

So which one was better?

THE BOOK!!

  • Could not put it down
  • Very suspenseful
  • Never a dull moment
  • Did not capture same suspense as the book
  • Not as intense
  • Boring at times
  • Love the plot, but didn't excite me as much as the book did.

Dean Koontz

Summary

Differences

  • Romance between Jack and Chyna
  • No romance in the book, could've added to the movie
  • Came to a driver and asked for help and Cop tried to find Ariel
  • Added more to the plot
  • Doesn't see man in closet
  • Very clean movie, could've been too gory
  • Goes back to Vess's house instead of fighting in the street
  • Added more suspense; Vess had to find them

Theme/Author's Intent

Fate

Significant Characters

  • Suspenseful Music
  • Flashbacks of childhood throughout the movie

  • In Intensity, you can control your own fate and can choose whether or not you will be a victim
  • When Chyna was 16, she decided to go and leave her Mother after the abuse that she was getting from her mother's boyfriends
  • Ariel was in an isolated state when Chyna tried to reach her, which excited Vess and only kept her captive longer, but when she actually helped Chyna they both ended up escaping alive

Adds to movie because it made it seem more suspenseful
