What is a Vestigial Tail?

How do you get a tail?

Having a vestigial tail is a rare birth defect. A vestigial body part or organ is a body part or organ that used to be useful to us but is no longer useful to us. So in this case, it's a tail

Can you remove it?

Yes, and it's not painful for the baby! As far as we know, doctors will automatically cut the tail off unless requested not to. There are some kids out there though with tails! Isn't that cool?

Babies get a tail because of a mutation in the embryo where the spinal cord develops farther than usual. This occurs twice as much as males than females, but it still isn't often. The tails can be even grown up to either 13 centimeters long, or it could just be a stub

Can you control it?

Are there any side effects?

Yes you can! Depending on how long it is, you can definitely control it because the tail has nerves in it and the bones to control it.

There are no side effects, unless you count wanting to hide your tail or show it off. It all just depends on the person when they get older.
