Military Alliance

NATO is well-known for its military and political alliance, as well as Article 5. Today, NATO's Article 5 has been invoked once by the 9/11 terrorist attack. Article 5 commits each member state to consider an armed attack against one member state, in Europe or North

America, to be an armed attack

against them all.

So in a hypothetical invasion by

some major country would be an

attack on all of NATO.

Members

In 1949, there were twelve members. Today, NATO's members are twenty-eight. NATO's HQ is located in Brussels, Belgium, who is a member of this organisation.

The original twelve include: Belgium, Canada, Denmark, France, Iceland, Italy, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, The UK, and The US.

NATO Today

Although the threat of Soviet expansion has disappeared from the world (*cough*Putin*cough*), there is still the act of keeping peace and democracy in Europe, both diplomatically and militarily.

If needed, NATO will enact

sanctions or may even use

military force to enforce and

exert their will.

NATO/OTAN's Birth

Founded on April 4, 1949, in Washington, D.C., NATO was designed to strengthen and unify Western Europe.

Its three main purposes were to deter Soviet expansion, forbid the revival of nationalist militarism in Europe, and encourage European political integration.
