Changes to Franklin High School

Reducing Pressure and Providing Home Economics Classes

Possible Drawbacks &

Their Solutions:

Possible drawbacks & Their Solutions

My Mission

Beneficial?

My mission is to shed some light on the benefits of a smaller class sizes and home economics courses.

Home Economics

I consider the most beneficial part of this course is teaching students how to cook. Several health risks could easily be prevented by providing an education on the benefit and instruction on how to cook nutritious meals. hOME ECONOMICS ALSO HELPS STUDENTS develop THEIR OWN VIEWS AND OPINIONS ON A VARIETY OF TOPICS.

Alice Lichtenstein,

How This Change Can be Implemented

professor of nutrition science and policy at Tufts University, believes that not providing this course is a direct link to the obesity epidemic.

One might argue that Franklin High school doesn't have the proper classroom with the required materials or a budget to support the class.

Franklin has to take certain steps to figure out how we can provide this beneficial course at our school. Some of the material the school will need is a teacher with the proper knowledge on the topic and a classroom with the required appliances such as ovens, sinks, or microwaves. Lastly, Franklin will need students who are interested in taking the course and figure out a class budget.

"Prevention is more powerful than treatment, but it is difficult when our education system is not teaching children how to prepare fresh food," Lichtenstein says. "Every child—male and female—should have those skills, but many don't grow up in an environment where there's someone to teach or model them."

Situation #1

As it stands the average class size in Franklin high school is about twenty to thirty students. Reasearch shows that larger classes

Situation #2

Solution

As it stands, Franklin High does not provide a home economics class for the students.

Solution

A possible solution is to find sponsors who are interested & see the benefits of providing this course at FHS.

My solution is to convince Franklin High School to provide this class because Home Economics is a subject that incorporates multiple aspects of interests.
