Community Significance

By offering medications, check-ups, and food, we alleviated suffering, hunger, and ignorance about general medical knowledge. The quality of life experienced by the people of the Dominican Republic was improved.

Project Details

My responsibilities included:

  • Being a medical translator
  • Working as a medical scribe
  • Visiting homes
  • Collecting/Distributing medications & food

Project Reflections

The trip exceeded my expectations. Our clinics treated hundreds of patients while I provided a total of 50 hours of service. I improved my ability to speak spanish, made new friends, and confirmed my decision to pursue a career in the medical field.

Project Overview

I traveled to San Juan de la Maguana, Dominican Republic from Dec. 15-23 for a medical service trip in order to:

  • Learn about health care
  • Practice working with patients
  • Provide health screenings
  • Hand out food & medications

I made the trip with 12 other students from the RHS program at SUU. We partnered with SRI, a non-profit organization, to provide such service.

EDGE Program

Larger Purpose

I completed this trip as a part of the EDGE program at SUU. The EDGE program is designed to provide a structure to experiential learning opportunities. This platform is a graduation requirement and will support my long-term professional plans.

My motivation for the trip was to show my interest in healthcare and service, particularly to those in under served communities, to make me a better applicant for medical school.
