Correctional Officials recognize that their work is a public service
and that unethical behavior and misconduct erodes public confidence and for this reason corrections department across the country adopt and enforce code of ethics and conduct for correctional officers and other employees whose jobs involve overseeing correctional facilities and the prisoners in them.
Ethics is the study of right an wrong, good and evil, however there is always the question of who decides what is right and wrong? Correctional officer adhere to a code of ethics and professional conduct, which is a set of standards of pertaining to morals and the effective discharge of duties. There is no uniform text for the code, with each jurisdiction or the facility allowed to craft its own. However, the overarching goal is to administer justice with integrity, within the bounds of the law. The code serves as the basis of policies and directives, rules and regulations, protocols and procedures, all of which are observed and undertaken in relation to facility management and operations. It embodies such core values as discipline, judiciousness, truthfulness, vigilance respect for human rights and sense of responsibility.

Correctional Officers face numerous ethical dilemmas on the job. For instance, well connected
prisoners have many opportunities to bribe them for better treatment. Other inmates may be abusive to officers for no reason. In either case the officer must treat prisoner equally. They must enforce the prison rules firmly and consistently. Not only does this policy ensure smooth prison administration, it provides an ethical model for prisoners to follow.
