How did we power vehicles?

  • Today, we use gasoline for most vehicles.
  • Horses were used as an essential way of carrying people and goods.
  • Besides horses, we had ships. For thousands of years, ships were moved my oars or sails.
  • First steam-powered boat voyage in 1783. In 1838, propellers became better means of propulsion.
  • Trains were the way to travel on rails.
  • Richard Trevithick built a train that carried 10 tons of iron and 70 men along a track. First inventor to put trains and steam engines together.
  • First motorcycles and cars used a steam engine until the internal combustion engine was developed to make use of gas

  • Around 1890, almost everyone who needed a horse for travel, had one.
  • Cars, motorcycles, planes and helicopters revolutionized transportation.

There were many changes that occurred in transportation in the last two centuries. But, even with the technological advances we have made, some early technology was kept and is still in use today.

The early wheel

  • In 3500 B.C, first wheels were in use. More than 5000 years later, wheels are still in use.
  • First wheels were used for pottery making.
  • Some modifications have been made to the wheel since then.
