Stop 1: The '60's

1960's

The hippie decade came directly before disco. When the popularity of rock music began to fade due to events such as the Charles Manson murders, people were waiting for the next big music trend. Disco answered the call.

Disco's "ancestors" were also in the 1960's. When people went out to dance, there were structured steps, such as the Mashed Potatoe and the Twist. These steps had a slight disco feel to them, because although they were structured, there was freedom to them as well.

Towards the end of the decade, many people were hoping for dance music to take over the rock music that was still popular. In 1970, the Beatles, one of the most popular and influential musical groups of the time, disbanded. This left room that disco music icons such as Donna Summer and the Bee Gees were soon to fill.
