"Sports reveal what is possible."
Based on "Have Sports Teams Brought Down America's Schools?" by Elizabeth Kolbert from The New Yorker
Children are the future of our society, and any investment in the education and enrichment of children is a sound, necessary, and impactful one. However, we have interpreted this article as a slanted criticism of the current system of education in the U.S. that offers no viable solution to our main issue and lacks any meaningful or substantial evidence. The connection between the presence of sports in U.S. schools and our undesirable results in vital school subjects is unsupported by the author of the article, who makes biased claims with nothing to back them. While this article does serve to put a spotlight on the need for reform in our educational procedures, it focuses on a trivial aspect of our system while disregarding the benefits of it. There is no excuse for our poor performance in school subject exams, but we believe educated and well-thought measures need to be taken instead of making flimsy accusations attributing our problem to a vital part of our culture, sports.
Lesson of the Article
We believe the message of the article is that sports prohibit children from attaining the maximum greatness academically and that without in-school sports programs, teachers would not only be able to work more on their lessons, but would also be more energetic and less tired by the end of the day. Students show off their natural capability playing sports, now all we have to do is harness and redirect their focus and passion in to academics. We are not agreeing with the article, only stating the author's main point and focus.
Interpretation and Analysis by: Luis Garcia and Dylan Kahn
In the United States of America, schools do not only serve to educate students on core subjects such as history, language arts, and math, but they also serve to prepare students for the future and make students contributing members of society. Sports and athletics are an undeniably integral part of our culture, and labeling sports as a "distraction" and isolating students from them is irresponsible and counter-productive. The author's unsupported foccinaucinihilipilification of organized sports in schools is, from our perspective, a misguided attempt to blame something for the unbelievable and troubling failure of high school students compared to other nations. An age-old institution that promotes discipline and determination in life is not at fault for our shortcomings. The honorificabilitudinitatibus of organized sports has been maintained over centuries for a reason: sports are a benefit to our youth.
The ball is tipped
and there you are
you're running for your life
you're a shooting star
And all the years
no one knows
just how hard you worked
but now it shows...
(that) ONE SHINING MOMENT, YOU REACHED DEEP INSIDE
ONE SHINING MOMENT, YOU KNEW YOU WERE ALIVE
Feel the beat of your heart
feel the wind in your face
it's more than a contest
it's more than a race...
And when it's done
win or lose
you always did your best
cuz inside you knew...
(that) ONE SHINING MOMENT, YOU REACHED FOR THE SKY
ONE SHINING MOMENT, YOU KNEW
ONE SHINING MOMENT, YOU WERE WILLING TO TRY
ONE SHINING MOMENT....
