After the ball, Stargirl disappears. However, she left a lasting impression on Leo and the other students at Mica High.
Stargirl accepts the fact that Leo can not love her for who she is. She goes to the Ocotillo Ball by herself and has a blast. Suddenly, the shunning is over, and she becomes popular again.
Soon it becomes clear that the students of Mica High still do not accept her now that she is normal. Eventually, she embraces her true identity and becomes Stargirl again.
After an incident at a football game, Stargirl is invited to join the school cheerleading squad. Suddenly, she becomes popular and other students begin to become more individualistic.
Unfortunately, her enthusiastic cheerleading lead to Stargirl's downfall in popularity. The students of Mica High turned on her when she aided a member of the opposing team during a game. Her fall from popularity was fast and ruthless. Everyone began to shun her except Leo and her one loyal friend, Dori.
When Leo realizes he is being shunned too, he tells Stargirl that she has to change in order for them to stay together. Susan, the former Stargirl, tries to become normal to please Leo. Leo trains her to be like everyone else.
The story begins at Mica Area High School in Arizona where everyone is the same. All the students wear the same kind of clothing, listen to the same kind of music, eat the same kind of food, etc. On Leo's first day of eleventh grade, everyone is buzzing about a new tenth grader, Stargirl Caraway, who wears odd clothing, carries a ukelele, and totes her pet rat named Cinnamon. The students of Mica High are suspicious of Stargirl and avoid her.
