Guam

What was WWII?

African Theater

  • Guam was under Japanese control during WWII.
  • World War II was a conflict that involved virtually every part of the world during the years 1939–1945. There were two sides, the Axis powers—Germany, Italy, and Japan—and the Allies—France, Great Britain, the United States, and the Soviet Union. The war was in many respects a continuation, of the disputes left unsettled by World War I. The 40,000,000–50,000,000 deaths in World War II make it the bloodiest conflict, as well as the largest war, in history.
  • It was known as the African War and occurred through June 10 1940- May 2 1945.
  • The war resulted in the allies winning and the fall of the Italian Empire.
  • The leaders of the allies side at that time were Wavell, Auchinleck, and Eisenhower.
  • The leaders of the Axis powers at that time were Kesselring, Mussolini, and Badoglio.

European Theater

Where is the African Theater located?

Three,

One,

  • The European Theater is also known as the European War.
  • The result of the European War was allied victory, collapse of fascist Italy, collapse of Nazi, Germany, and the end of WWII.
  • The leaders of the Allies side at the time were Stalin, Churchill, and FDR.
  • The leaders of the Axis side at the time were Hitler, Mussolini, Antonescu.

The Japanese fought in a manner much different from the Germans, so U.S. soldiers had to learn how to fight using different techniques and adjust to fighting against different techniques.

  • The African Theater is located in the Northern top half of Africa.
  • This Theater is very close to the the European Theater.

There were several different types of warfare between the 3 fronts. With hundreds of islands under their control, Americans were faced with the daunting task of seizing each one. The U.S. needed to land troops on, pieces of rock no bigger than a small city, amidst obstacles of corral reef, then advance into thick jungle conditions, all the while, fighting an enemy who enjoyed air support, and entrenched in bunkers, tunnels and caves.

  • FDR was the United States president and led the country through the Great Depression, WWII, and the post-war peace organization.

Axis:

  • Hitler was the Nazi leader from 1889-1945. He was one of the most powerful and infamous of the 20th century. In 1933, he took control of the German government.
  • Benito Mussolini was the Italian dictator who allied himself with Hitler to increase his leadership during WWII.
  • Ion Antonescu was the Prime Minister of Romania during WWII. He was known as "Hitler's forgotton ally."

All of our supplies had to be moved by sea, which put huge demands on shipping and it was hard to protect all of those supply ships over such a big ocean as the Pacific. The Japanese were very well dug in to the islands they defended.
