Loyalty

The motif of Loyalty in Macbeth is often shown in a negative light, where the loyalty of one character to another is broken or fake.

Macbeth betrayed Banquo

Conclusion

"So I lose none / In seeking augment it, but still keep / My bosom frachised and allegiance clear, / I shall be counseled. (II.i.26-29)"

  • Banquo told Macbeth he would be loyal to him as long as he can keep his conscience clear
  • Macbeth killed him even though he had no real reason to fear him

False loyalty is a reoccurring theme in Macbeth. Friends quickly become foes, and oftentimes the one being betrayed is unaware of what is really happening.

Macbeth betrayed the king

"Who can be wise, amazed, temp'rate and furious, / Loyal and neutral, in a moment? No man. / The expedition of my violent love / Outrun the pauser, reason. (II.iii.104-107)"

  • Macbeth killed Duncan even though Duncan had provided him with a higher title
  • he lied and said that he was loyal to Duncan to try and cover up the murder

Loyalty to Scotland

"Well, march we on, / To give obedience where 'tis truly owed. / Meet we the med'cine of the sickly weal, / And with him pour we, in our country's purge, / Each drop of us. (V.ii.25-29)"

  • the nobles and soldiers are marching to Inverness
  • loyalty is finally shown in a positive way, because the devotion to their country and Malcolm as a new leader moves the characters forward
