Draco, the legislator

Draconian Constitution

Influence of American law

Legislator

Draco and the Draconian Constitution set the foundation for modern day laws, minus the extremely harsh punishments.

As legislator of Rome, Draco wrote the Draconian Constitution in order to preserve the laws. Punishments for crimes were particularly extreme and harsh, and many saw these laws as unfair. An examples of the extremities of the law would be that Debtors were forced into slavery if his worth was lesser than that of the creditor. Some punishments include starvation, and multiple death penalties

Draco was the first legislator of Athens, Greece. His role as legislator brought significant change in the way law was enforced. Draco also replaced oral law and tradition. Though surprisingly severe, only the upper class knew of these laws.
