Modern -day prostheses easily mobile, quick to manipulate, comfortable, and compatible.

The Capua leg is the oldest known example of a prosthetic leg. Forged from bronze, iron, and wood by ancient Romans, the original leg was destroyed in WWII. A replica can be found in the Science Museum in London.

Copper, iron, steel, and wood, were used to make prostheses during the Renaissance.

The first known prosthetic was a prosthetic toe made of leather and wood. This was discovered in 2000 C.E. on an ancient Egyptian mummy in a tomb near Thebes.

During WWII, prosthetics were made of mostly wood and leather.

During the American Civil War, a "cosmetic rubber hand" was manufactured, allowing the wearer to move his digits freely.

During the Middle Ages, those who could afford it would be fitted for a peg leg or hand hook. Though functionality was never a primary focus, more prosthetics began so surface that possessed springs or gears to increase mobility and use.

The Greville Chester toe was also discovered in 2000 C.E. in a tomb near Luxor. This 'toe' is made of cartonnage.

Wood and leather prostheses were starting to become lighter and better fit. Prosthetic socks were introduced to provide more comfort to the wearer.
