Shakespeare's Sonnet 41

Form

The form of this sonnet also plays a big part in the speakers purpose. The first quatrain shows his initial feelings towards his lovers beauty. The second quatrain shows how various people were chasing after this woman because of her looks. A volta in the third quatrain shows how he would win her over and feels like her beauty forced him to love her. The couplet shows how the speakers cared for the beauty on the inside. The meter of this poem is also important, as he emphasizes certain words. One example of this is in line 10, when the words stray and youth are stressed. This shows the fact that as she gets older, she retainers her beauty.

Style

To add to the purpose, Shakespeare uses various means of literary devices, such as personification. One example of this is in the last line of the first quatrain. Shakespeare wrote, "For still temptation follows where thou art." This line demonstrates, personification, as temptation can not literally follow anyone around, but is implies that her beauty is temptation for others, and the speaker can't help but follow. This adds to the speakers purpose because it demonstrates how the speaker initially thought of the woman he is so fond of. In the last line of the couplet, however, there is a shift in tone and mood. The author writes, "Thine by thy beauty being false to me." This shift shows how, when he really thinks about it, he doesn't care about whats on the outside, but cares about the contents of her heart.

Story

In Sonnet 41, Shakespeare reveals how although many can be tempted by beauty on the outside, they should be focusing on inside beauty. The speaker intends to show that he really cares about is the inside beauty, although at times it may not seem like it.
