Apothecaries worked in shops and personal homes. In Apothecary shops they also sold “cooking spices, candles, salad oil, anchovies, toothbrushes, and tobacco, making them true precursors of today's drugstores.”
What would make being an apothecary interesting is that I would like to make new potions and cures for illnesses.
“A colonial apothecary practiced as a doctor. Records kept by 18th-century Williamsburg's apothecaries show that they made house calls to treat patients, made and prescribed medicines, and trained apprentices. Some apothecaries were also trained as surgeons and man-midwives.”
Dental Instruments: like the “goat’s foot” which was used to lift the tooth from the bone.
Medical Manuals and Textbooks: they used these for guidance and reference on how to make potions or how to treat a disease.
Surgical Instruments: like the lancet, which was a small knife that was used to cut abscesses or draw blood.
Mortar and Pestle: Apothecaries used these to grind herbs and plants to make medicines and treatments. This symbol is still used in many pharmacies today.
Apothecaries learned the skills of their trade by training as an apprentice in hospitals, by reading medical books, and by going to lectures.
To do the job you need to have the right tools. Apothecaries need many types of tools to perform many different types of operations and services.
