STRESS

What can we do to help Sinclair students deal with stress?

  • Clearly, the largest cause of stress was a lack of free time
  • All the students were working toward goals and objectives, never taking any time for themselves
  • We thought the best way to build resiliency and help students deal with stress was to give them that much needed down time
  • Intended to help students cope with pressure
  • Building resiliency to the pressures of everyday life
  • Our idea was initiated by students for students
  • Learn ways to self-regulate physically, emotionally, socially

What's the Problem?

WE'RE STRESSED!

Kids at Sinclair have talked about stress related to...

  • homework
  • grades
  • university/college/apprenticeship
  • time management
  • family pressures
  • high school 'drama'

This Was Our Idea:

  • SFZ is a club dedicated to relaxation
  • Students meet weekly to hang out and 'de-stress'
  • Several options are available to students each week including yoga (led by a yoga instructor/teacher), board games, sports, or a movie
  • There was no strict organization or groups: students move freely between activities
  • The activities change regularly; for example, handball one week and frisbee the next

Here's What They Said ...

How We Got Going:

  • We spread the word through posters, announcements and promoting the idea to our classes.
  • At the first meeting, we introduced the idea of our club
  • We had students complete a survey about stress and pressure in high school
  • The club is still going strong, every Thursday after school

How Will We Keep This Going?

  • Each week we continue to promote our club to students
  • We vary our activities to make sure everyone has something they enjoy
  • All students are welcome
  • Every week we see more people from all grades
