Fighting and protesting has continued in most major cities in Syria. Just recently Russia, Iran and Turkey have agreed to enforce a ceasefire between the government and non-Islamist rebels, after talks between the two sides in Kazakhstan.

This is the first year where the real uprising was recognized. Security forces shot protestors in Deraa.

May 2010

US renews sanctions against Syria, saying that it supports terrorist groups, seeks weapons of mass destruction.

March 2009

US secretary of state visits Damascus with White House national security aide. This is the first high-level US diplomatic mission for nearly four years.

October 2008

Syrian establishes diplomatic sanctions with Syria for the first time since both countries became independent (1940)

April 2007

Nancy pelosi meets President Assad in Damascus. Pelosi is the highest placed US politician to visit Syria in recent years.

November 2006

Iraq and Syria restore diplomatic relations after 25 years.

Senior US officials list Syria as one of the states that make up an "axis of evil". Damascus is reportedly acquiring weapons of mass destruction at this time

January 2004

President Assad visits Turkey, the first time a Syrian leader has done so. Relations between the countries increase for a little, but become worse again in 2011.

May 2004

The US imposes economic sanctions on Syria.
