The Mercator projection was very important because it turned the lines of constant on the earth into straight lines on a map. But the issue with this was that the gaps between the latitude lines increased as they got closer to the poles and no calculation were left behind on why this happened. Until one day Thomas Harriot figured it out.
-Thomas Harriot was a mathematician that was not very well known during the Elizabethan age itself, but he played an impotant role in the mathematics of the Elizabethan Era. He was described as one of the best mathematician's that Oxford produced. His work was lost for awhile, but when it was found, it consisted of a system of symbolic algebra, workable binary numbers, and other things.
At one point Thomas Harriot corresponded with a German Mathmatician called Johannes Kelper and they discussed the issue of stacking spheres. This led to Kelper's suggestion in 1611 of stacking spheres in the face-centered cubic packing and the hexagonal close packing.
Some more scientific discoveries that were made were:
-Vesalius founded the human anatomy after dissecting the human body and giving a detailed description on it.
-Harvey discovered human physiology after observing live animals and discovering the blood circulation.
-Francis Bacon was known for breaking the gap between theory and practice. He also belived that if all data resources for a certain issue were obtained, general laws could be formulated.
-Then William Gilbert of Colchester experimented in physical science and was one of the first to do so. He proved that a magnetic needle would point to the north when freely suspended.
-A very famous astrologer from the Elizabethan Era was Dr. John Dee. He devoted a lot of his life to the practice of astrology and put a lot of effort into it. He was also the one who invented the crystal ball.
-More famous astrologers were Edward Kelley, William Lilly, Tyro Brathe and Nostradamus.
-Also William Shakespeare incorporated astrology into a lot of his plays.
- Elizabethan's believed in the Ptolemaic system.
- Then Copernicus came up with the Copernican theory. But not many people believed in it.
-Galileo made the first telescope which helped discover the Milky Way, Jupiter's moons, Venus's phases and the sun moving on it's own axis.
- These discoveries helped the Elizabethan's believe in the Copernican theory more, and also another discovery made that helped make them believe in the Copernican thoery was that the planets moved around the sun in and elliptical motion. That discovery was made by Kelper.
-Astrology is the study of planets, stars, moons etc, and how they affect our lives. The practice of this roots back thousands of years.
-The 12 Astrological signs are Aries, Taurus, Gemini, Cancer, Leo, Virgo, Libra, Scorpio, Sagittaruis, Capricorn, Aquarius, and Pisces.
-The Elizabethan's belived at the exact moment of someone's birth, whatever the stars were doing at that time determined what kind of person they would become, how they would live their life and how they would die.
