Within a few days Japanese armed forces had occupiedveral strategic points in South Manchuria. The League of Nations effectively did nothing to stop Japan. Japan wanted Manchuria because it had nearly 200,000 square kilometers which could accommadate Japan's population. Japan also belived it held valuable resources.
On December 7, 1941, Japan launches a suprise attack on American soil at Pearl Harbor. The Japanese managed to destroy nearly 20 American naval vessels, including 8 battleships and more than 300 airplanes. More than 2,000 American soldiers and sailors died in the attack another 1,000 were wounded.
On Augest 6, 1945, an American B-29 bomber dropped the world's first atomic bomb over Hiroshima. The explosion wiped out 90% of the city, immediately killing 80,000 people, ten thousand later died from radiation exposure. Three days later a second bomb was dropped on Nagasaki, killing 40,000 people. This lead to Japan's surrender.
After the April 9, 1942, U.S. surrender of the Batoon Peninsula, approximatly 75,000 Filipino and American troops on Bataan were forced to march 65 miles to the prison camps. The men were divided into groups of approximatley 100, it took around five days to complete. Thousands died due to the brutality of their captors, thousands more died from disease, mistreatment and starvation.

The surrender of the Empire of Japan was announced on Augest 15 and was formally signed on September 2, 1945 bringing hostilities of world war 2 to a close.
The battle only lasted four days and was the first air-sea battle in history. A message was intercepted by Allied Forces from the Japanese. When the Japanese landed in the area, they were attacked by American troops. Both suffered damages to their carriers, the Japanese left battle without enough planes to cover a ground attack at Port Moresby resulting in a Allied Victory.
Japan attacks the Philippines starting on December 8, 1941 ten hours after the attack on Pearl Harbor. With the lack of air cover, the American fleet withdrew the Philippines to Java on Deccember 12, 1941. For three years and right to the day of Japan's surrender the Philippines suffered frievously under the depredations of military occupation.
