Backdrops

Used in Expressionist theatre and reveal character traits and meaning. I’d have a bold but confusing backdrop like this in terms of colour and style but there would be no eye.

Lighting

Lighting Design

I would use a basic profile spotlight on K to show that that's where the focus should be. Similarly to costume, Berkoff wanted the focus to be purely on the performer and so I wouldn't want to distract the audience with fancy lights.

Through the use of different colour filters, I can show different character feelings. For example, in times of sex, I would use a red filter to portray and element of danger in distracting K from his quest to prevent injustice. In times of confusion, along with sound, I would have a blue light quickly shine in moments of freeze frame.I would switch to a spotlight when the focus is solely on K and this would create a silhouette, enhancing the actor and focus of the audience.

Stage Images/ Freeze Frames

Design

Berkoff used stage images or freeze frames at times of confusion or when the focus is on K. I would continue with this at key points in the play.

Continuing with Berkoff’s constructive set design- I don’t want the piece to capture reality. Berkoff used frames to show different environments however I want to keep my set minimalistic so I would only use two, grey frames made of aluminum. They will be sat on a wooden platform with fixed wheels.

BERKOFF

Sound

In Berkoff’s version, a piano key would be struck in moments of confusion and injustice. I like this technique as the sound clearly conveys feelings of bewilderment and so I would also incorporate this.

Actor- generated

Only for sounds that are created by the audience- I’ll be using little props and so for example, when a phone rings, I would have the noise generated by the actor. The use of actor-generated noise also continues with Berkoff’s idea of enhancing the performer.

Costume

Style- timeless

Fun Fact About Berkoff

Appearance

Berkovian so white shirts, black smart trousers and plain black shoes. K would have a black waistcoat, black tie and small black spectacles.

Minimalistic. Berkoff wanted the costume to emphasis the actor. The audience would be unable to guess when the play takes place. I'd use timeless clothing to show this. It adds to the lack of information for the audience- why K is arrested, what happen in the end and when the piece takes place.

He performed in various big Hollywood films such as a Clockwork Orange, Rambo and Octopussy because he wanted to build a name for himself which would help bring in more people to his plays.

Staging

White painted face with black eyeshadow and red lipstick. Makes the performer more grotesque and enhances facial features.

I would have it performed in a traverse stage because it’s more intimate and puts the focus on every inch of the actor rather than having the play feel more like a three dimensional film at the cinema. Not as physically demanding as in the round which could distract from the performance due to too much movement.
