Types of Houses in New Jersey

Rancher

Dutch Colonial

Cape Cod

A Ranch style house is a one story house. These houses have long, low roof lines. They also obtain large windows, often decorated with shutters.

Dutch Colonial has 1 1/2 to 2 stories. They have columns for porches and entry. Clapboard or shingle siding, but occasionally with brick or stone facing.

Comes from the 17th century. Generally has a pitched roof and gables at the end. Interior is wood, most commonly maple or oak. Windows are multi-paned, double-hung and placed symmetrically.

Mid Atlantic Colonial

English Architecture

Steeply pitched roof, made of wood. You can see lots of design on around the house using wood

Tall, wide and symmetrical. Rooms are even sized, and organized.

Half-timbering on bay windows and upper floors, and facades that are dominate by one or more steeply pitched cross fables.

Batten doors, asymmetrical door and window openings, side-gabled entrance. Interior, one-room-deep linear plan. L- shape starcases around central chimney.

Georgian

Symmetrical bay windows in front. Small chimney set in irregular locations; tall, narrow, windows.

Simple 1-2 story box, 2 rooms deep, using strict symmetry arrangements. Panel front door centered, topped with rectangular windows. Multi-pane windows are never paired.

Found in the Midwest, South, New England, and Midatlantic regions. Full height, or full building width porches, and a front door surrounded by narrow rectangular windows.
