RIVER VALLEYS & SPURS

You've made it!

Time to test your new knowledge!

(You will be able to find this slideshow once we've set up Edmodo)

= spot the pencils! You must write these notes in your book!

Draw this in your book (trace your hand and then add spur and valley labels)

U's

Let's see what they look like together:

Or valleys with lots of spurs

Valley

Spur

You can get valleys with no spurs

How Do Spurs and Valleys Look on a Map?

Valleys:

  • Contours make a V-shape.

  • The pointy part of the V always points upslope.

U-shaped spur

Spurs:

  • Contour lines are U-shaped.

  • The closed part of the U always points downhill towards the lowest contour number.

Valley

Spurs:

  • Spurs are pieces of land that stick out between valleys.

  • Their slopes are usually not as steep as a valley.

  • So their contour lines will be spaced further apart.

SPUR

Valleys:

  • Valleys are lower than the land around them

  • They have steep slopes.

  • This means the contours will be close together.

  • There is sometimes (but not always) a river flowing through a valley.

VALLEY

You will need to know the difference between a valley and a spur and what they look like on a map.
