The Iliad: Book 7

But,

After that,

First,

the return of Hector and Paris escalates the battle, but Apollo and Athena decide that they want to end the battle for the day. They plan to have Hector approach the Achaeans and challenge any of them to a duel.

when the Trojans present this offer to the Achaeans the next day, the Achaeans can see that the Trojans are desperate and reject the offer. However, both the Trojans and the Achaeans agree to a day for their dead people. Zeus and Poseidon watch the Achaeans build their fortifications, planning to tear them down after all the men leave.

Hector and Ajax start the duel by throwing spears, but that doesn't work. Then they switch to lances and Ajax wounds Hector. They are about to continue with swords, but Zeus sends messengers to stop the fight because it has become very late in the night. They end the fight with a pact of friendship and they exchange gifts.

Then,

Soon,

Menelaus is the only one who has the courage to volunteer, but Agamemnon tells him not to because he knows Hector will beat him. Nestor tells people to fight Hector because he is too old to fight him and he wants someone to beat him. Nine of the Achaeans finally agree. They enter a lottery and the Great Ajax is the winner.

Nestor suggests that the Achaeans ask for a day to bury their dead friends. He also tells them that they should build fortifications around their camp. In the Trojan camp, they discuss the same thing to the Trojans and they also talk about Paris giving Helen back to end the whole war. Paris refuses to give Helen back, but decides to return all of the stuff he took from Sparta when he took Helen.
