KING

the most important piece, but the least powerful. It is the tallest piece and it always has a small cross on its crown. It is allowed to move one square at a time. It has a special move that the king can be done just once in the game called castling.

ROOK

came from the Arabic word rukh meaning chariot. It is also known, as castle or tower. It is a powerful piece but at the beginning of the game they were unable to move at all because they are hemmed in by the other pieces. They really come into their own later on, when the game has opened out. It is the piece responsible to hide the king in a castling. It moves It moves up and down as long as there is nothing in his way.

BISHOP

Sits near the king and queen at the start of the game. It is the heart of the government, crucial adviser to the ruling monarchs. It can move backwards and forwards along the diagonals for as many squares as it likes, as long as there is no obstacle.

KNIGHT

one of the craftiest members of the army. It is the general of the soldiers. It can move or leap two squares in a straight direction and then one to the side either to the left or right.

QUEEN

She has a crown. She can imitate all the moves of the pieces except the knight. It is the most powerful piece in the board.

PAWN

PAWN

The foot- soldiers, the least valuable members of the army. They are the souls of the chess game according to Andre Phildor. On the first move, they can move forward either one or two or squares at a time. It captures at one square diagonally at either side. The pawn has a special property when it reaches the other side of the board, it can be promoted into powerful piece.
