MAKER HAPPEN

SESSION #1

SPECIAL THANKS TO THE PRESENTERS AT NOMCON 2019 FOR INSPIRING THIS LUNCH & LEARN SERIES

The Business of MAKING

Culture

Perspectives

Club to Community Resource Center

Real

Professions

a paradigm shift

dwindling pool of workers

Maker

Disciplines*

Tools

welders, laser cutters, 3D printers, vinyl cutters

Toys

Career Preparation

showing up, project planning, communication

Making

*consider cyber security as a discipline

making is absolutely a career path

maker spaces bridge the soft-skills gap

vocational students are already up-skilled

Fewer than 10% of Makerspaces are in Small Towns

it's tough

the maker philosophy is in huge alignment with the small-town "cooperator" mentality

IDEAS

EFFORT

LOGISTICS

assemble a team willing to implement

don't just identify a problem; provide a solution

Makers

mixing digital natives with digital immigrants

We Are

We Aren't

organized

driven

People

recognized

creative

certified

skilled

Making

Stuff

Working Together

personalities evolve as a result of making

Safety includes the mentality of being excellent to one-another

Encourage opposing perspectives to work together on a solution

Remain open to criticism

Treat kids as equals

classes access hours boards

social events networking connections

Ground Rules

fear of failure is embedded

Ban kits + assembly instructions

Encourage makers not to make the thing they care about most first

Equip people “just enough” to feel safe to explore

Certifications should be the only barrier to tool access

Progress

Movement Changes

materials

tools

knowledge

community

automation

availability

access

support

Collaboration

1.

adopt a local problem to focus energy on finding a solution*

2.

set up informal creative environments**

Logistics

3.

focus on skills first, then move to certifications

4.

build your body of work and carefully document it

*police bike example

**but don't mix hazardous stuff

Creative Spaces

Two-Stage Growth Model: Exploration vs. Production

SKILL SPACES

DESIGN SPACES

RESEARCH SPACES

INSTRUCTION SPACES

Skills

then Certifications

Develop Skills First

then Pursue Certifications

FAMILIARITY

SPECIALIZATION

SAFETY

APPLICATION

skills and certifications are quickly becoming makerspaces bread and butter!

no better way to up-sell kids into jobs and degrees than experience

Portfolios

then

Degrees

"it's not your degree, it's your body of work"

encourage collaboration + exploration of other disciplines

build a bigger fridge to exhibit member's work

find fun / unique tasks to foster engagement

Makerspaces: a Social Resource

students (MS, HS, College) are building an index of makerspaces in their search regions

they're expecting makerspaces to be the place where they hang out to find/make friends

classes are the best way to bring people together*

pay extra special attention to accessibility, both physical access and time constraints

don't underestimate the value of location!

encourages full-family participation -or- other amenities nearby

*pocket party example

*estate sales are great for equipment and furniture

**manufacturers known to donate flawed parts to experiment with

Revenue Generators

Revenue Generators

offer "Safety Basics" courses on an ongoing basis to support local trades + businesses

partner with local unions and trades to offer training space for specialized certifications

open to as many interns / positions / businesses as possible to build social networks

graduate interns as a class at the end of "basic training"

Revenue Generators

consider customized summer manufacturer partnerships

  • find a sponsor business who wants an intern
  • give HR / Training personnel temporary access to makerspace to mingle
  • identify intern(s) for a specific discipline / trajectory
  • put through orientation and safety training at makerspace
  • facilitate site visits to local manufacturers and plants
  • support intern at makerspace to help them get in the habit of "showing up"

Expense

Planning

Expense Planning

PHASE 4:

PHASE 3:

PHASE 2:

PHASE 1:

outfitting spaces

establishing production capacity

converting grants into baseline revenue

building a 6-18 month

reserve

partnering with developers

setting up endowment funds + cash reserves

running short-term sample operations for local businesses

revenue to cover staff positions

+

applying for city subsidy programs

Call to Action

1) Know the problem you’re going to

solve with your first $1

Discussion

2) turn it into a revenue generator

3) identify the next problem to tackle

Build a healthy baseline that gives you the flexibility to chase new grants and programs, but maintain the fundamentals once they’re in place.
