Cheetah Live Cam

We don't see much in the live cam because the cubs are so active!

What comes next for the cubs?

Next week the cubs will have their first veterinary exam. They will receive their first vaccines, and vets will listen to their hearts and lungs. For now though, we just continue to weigh them.

Our next stop....panda bears

Enrichment

Elephants are very intelligent and need to keep busy.

Animals need "enrichment" activities to stay active and healthy

Enrichment often falls into one or more categories, such as:

Habitat: Keepers can manipulate multiple aspects of the animals’ environment, such as adding trees, vines and perching, changing substrates, or providing new bedding and den options. This adds novelty and complexity to the animals’ lives.

Cognitive: Positive reinforcement training sessions are excellent cognitive enrichment; it gives the animals a chance to exercise their minds. Participation in research projects offers mental stimulation (i.e., foraging skills research with giant pandas, memory research with orangutans, color vision tests with monitor lizards).

Sensory: A keeper can introduce natural predator or prey scents, in addition to novel smells, such as spices or diluted perfumes. Taped sounds or vocalizations can simulate things that an animal may hear in the wild.

Food: This is the most widely used form of enrichment. Keepers can present an animal’s normal diet as well as new food items in a variety of ways such as in a puzzle feeder, hidden, buried or scattered throughout the enclosure, or in frozen ice treats. It is important for the Zoo’s animals to work for their food, just as their wild counterparts do.

Toys: These items can include burlap bags, sheets, boomer balls, chew toys or hammocks. Often, novel objects will be combined with food-related enrichment.

Let's learn about the animal enrichment program at the Smithsonian National Zoo

Meet the eagles

The Zoo is home to two bald eagles: male Tioga and female Annie. Tioga came to the Zoo from the American Eagle Foundation in Tennessee. He was born in the wild, but was found injured as a fledgling, having fractured his left shoulder. It healed out-of-position, and he never regained the ability to fly. Annie was found in a marsh, unable to fly, in Anne Arundel County—for which she was named. Because a portion of her left wing had to be amputated, she was not released into the wild.

Bald Eagles

Conservation Efforts

In 1963 there were only 400 bald eagles left, now the bald eagle is "least concern on conservation status. What do you think caused this change?

What is a black footed ferret?

The black-footed ferret is thought to be the only native ferret species in North America. They were once thought to be extinct. Zoo breeding and reintroduction strategies have provided an incredible recovery for the black-footed ferret

Big Cats

Did you know?

There are only approximately 3,900 tigers left in the wild.

The Smithsonian participates in conservation efforts to responsibly breed and manage tiger populations.

Tigers Oh MY!

Summer School for Lions? Yep, at the Smithsonian the lion cubs go to summer school.

More than ferret food!

Did you know:

  • Prairie Dogs are not an endangered animal.
  • They are named "dog" because of their loud bark.
  • Prairie Dogs are often exterminated and treated as pests.
  • Some Prairie Dogs have been infected with a disease called the Sylvatic Plague
  • Prairie Dogs are important to restoring America's Wild Prairie.

Conservation Efforts

Giraffe Center, Nairobi Kenya was purposefully set up to preserve the Rothschild Giraffe.

The center works with African Fund for Endangered Wildlife and Kenyan School Children to provide education and resources.

The giraffes wander freely around the property and may even poke their heads into the lodge to check out a dinner plate.
