The setting of this story takes place at night in a forest in the Karpathaians during winter. The two characters of this story are Ulrich von Gradwitz and Georg Znaeym. The author lets the reader know that both these characters are enemies of each other. There is no clear protagonist and antagonist, however it seems as though the protagonist is Ulrich von Gradwitz and the antagonist is Georg Znaeym. These roles seem to change throughout the course of the story.
The rising actions for this story include when both men finally come in contact with each other and subsequently lightning striking a tree, crushing both Ulrich and Georg. Once they are pinned they both see who's men come first while wishing death to each other. After a while, Ulrich decides to mend their relationship as enemies as we approach the climax.
The climax of "The Interlopers" occurs when both Ulrich von Gradwitz and Georg Znaeym decide to not be enemies and instead become friends for the first time ever. This would be the climax since the conflict between Ulrich and Georg which has been driving the plot so far has ultimately been resolved.
With their freshly mended relationship, both men attempt one last time to call for help.
At the end of the story, their men do not end up coming. Instead, they gathered the attention of a pack of wolves. This ending lets the reader assume that both men will meet their end when they get mauled by the wolves. Also, we can see the roles changing here as well. Now that Ulrich and Georg do not oppose each other, the wolves have now become the antagonists as both men become the protagonists.
