Xu Bing

“the living word”

Xu Bing and his work “the living word”

throughout my study of art is code I stumbled across the artist Xu Bing and his work “the living word” throughout his work, Xu Bing has reflected heavily on the language that we speak this is heavily portrayed in his artwork the living word which explores his study on ancient Pictionary art forms that made up the fundamentals of the Chinese language and brought it back to what is commonly spoken today. His artwork the living word explores the word bird as it literally and metaphorically flies off the page from the word bird to the ancient Pictionary image of bird

Egyptian hieroglyphs

we can discover the origin of Xu Bing when we explore the origin of the written language. This of course is brought back to the ancient Egyptian language commonly known as hieroglyphics. Hieroglyphics are a series of Pictionary words that have common meaning to the people reading them. looking back at the definition on the stimulus of what art is code is we can see that it is a conveyed meaning that is put forth for the audience to understand throughout the artwork. what better way to put forth a meaning than to literally draw or write what you're trying to say hieroglyphics and the ancient Chinese writing our example of these used in ancient art

Banksy

Banksy

My artworks

One of the most well-known street artists Banksy and his arsenal of artworks, have a huge impact in the street art culture. With a huge following an unknown identity added entire style of street art dedicated to his name Banksy is one of the most influential artists of our time.

His artwork are understandably and undoubtedly a message with his artwork sprouting in many different parts of the world with increasing disturbing messages and shock value paintings Banksy's artwork is there to produce a message. if we look at his artwork and more specifically the two examples I have above for symbols and messages they are very plain and easy to read, “violence should be below love” the simple message of a man who is in the stands to throw something dangerous this holding flowers. “The world is absorbed with social media” the simple act of a boy crying below the Instagram status bar.

blek le rat

blek le rat

blek le rat is a French graffiti stencil artist that has known and obvious links to the inspiration of Banksy's work. although it lacks in political messages and shock factor value. his work resonates with an audience to create their own meaning his signature addition to all its artworks is a rat but but it's what he puts around this focal piece creates a message that the audience must interpret for themselves. but it's blek le rat introduction into mainstream graffiti arts that has our more direct tie to Banks's work.

ArtLords

ArtLords

"as opposed to the warlords and drug lords who have brought so much strife and misery to Afghanistan"

“Using art as a tool for social change” is less of a movement and more of a group of artists. Painting messages through words and images these Afghan artists are using out to create a strong message. Painting on government enforced blast walls. In order to protect residents from roadside bombings and missile attacks. The artLords a paint controversial and inspirational people in the Afghan war and inspirational messages to change. Although it is less hidden than other artists, these collective groups are using art as a way to tell a story or to tell a message.

propaganda artworks

in 1939 America was debating whether to join the war. After the Japanese bombed Pearl Harbor in 1941 the war between America and Japan was on. America had a massive influx of enlistments into the military; however America still listed hundreds of artist to create posters to lure people to join the military. These " propaganda" artworks can often be proclaimed as the wrong type of message glorifying war or a persuasive incorrect argument. However, nevertheless, it is a painting that tells a story and sparks interest or emotion within someone. These paintings proved to be incredibly useful in their enlistment during World War II, and many of these artworks are iconic in American World War II history.

Although it brings an opposite meaning to the artlords it still uses art to influence war and politics. it in your face messages while sometimes written and sometimes created in the artwork bring the audience to discover and see the message first-hand.

George Matthews Harding

George Matthews Harding

“Charcoal, pastel, and crayon on heavy textured wove paper. The work depicts a camouflaged German airplane falling out of the sky. On the ground are two deceased German soldiers in a machine gun nest. A tank and wire entanglements are outlined in the background”

George was born in Philadelphia into an artistic family during it his enlistment in the U.S. Army he developed his artistic relatives on the battlefield often depicting, trial and tribulation of the battlefield and showing both angles on both sides of glory and death. This message is displayed through the shock factor value of each artwork but has common ties to both the World War II propaganda posters, and the now present artlord through its message depicting war as something to be talked about and something to be informed upon.

  • Colors of the Xu Bing work and his flow of the message
  • Bekesy art style and obvious messages through out his work
