Wealth

Sebastian Viscaino was a very rich man.His wealth partly came from his good buisness deals and partly from the women he married, since that women owned lots of property.

Mexico/New Spain

Before exploring Baja (lower California)Sebastian Viscaino stoped at New Spain. The Viceory of New Spain was Gaspar de Zuniga y Azevedo,Count Montery. He persuaded Viscaino to command an exploration of California under the alligence of Spain. This expadition was ordered by King Philip lll.

Earnig Money

Sebastian Viscaino saw a chance to earn more money. He made constant trips beetween Manila in the philipines and New Spain to trade silver and gold.He also tried to establish a pearl fishery and a settlement baja (lower) California. The plan was abbondened when a fire destroyed his camp.

California

Sebastian Viscaino sailed from Acapulco,on the coast of New Spain,on 1602,with about 200 people and 3 small galleons. One was called the San Diego. The second one was called the Santa Tomas. The other one was called the Tres Reyes.

Exploring

Sebastian Viscaino explored many places Cabrillo did in 1542.Vistcaino and his crew outlined the border of California.

The first stop was in Alta California,San Miguel, which Viscaino renamed as San DieDgo Bay.He chose this name because they anchored ther on November 12,the feast day of St.Didacus of Alcala. They stayed there for 10 days and survived on the food the Calafornian Native Americans gave them and fresh sea food.

Viscaino didn't just rename places.For example,he named Santa Cantalina,San Pedro,Santa BarbaraPoint Conception,the Santa Lucia Moutains.Carmel Bay,and the Carmel Rivers.

The crew

There were not only soldiers and sailors on board.Viscaino brought 6 navigators,a cartographer,3 preists,and his 13-year-old son,Juan.

Finding a Harbor

On December 16,1602,Viscaino sailed into a broad bay.He named it El Puerto de Monterey,in honor of count Monterey

who had sent him on his journey.Viscain said it was "sheltered from all wind,"but in truth, his description was so misleading that later explorers did not recognize it as Monterey Bay.Viscaino also did not see the San Francisco bay.

Lying for the Best

Sebastian Viscaino wanted to get the reward of cammand of a Manila galleon. He thought thought lying about the harbor would be the best way to get it.Count Monterey was pleased with Viscaino, and he listened to Viscaino's plans for settlement in Monterey.Although,Monterey was replaced as Viceroy in 1603 by the Marques de Montesclaros, who did not like Viscaino and refused to give him command of a Manila galleon,as Viscaino had been promised. The Marques accused the expetions map maker,Martinez Palacios of forgery and Palacios was hanged for this reason.

Lying for the Best

After years

After Viscaino's journey,he still did other things, though he sadly died afterwards in mexico in 1629,but he is still remembered. The places he named still remain the same.

After years

What he acomplished

Before Viscaino died in 1629,he became an envoy for the King of Spain. He was sent to look for riches in islands reported to be near Japan.Though the islands were not found,Viscaino explored and mapped the coast of Japan. He came back to California in 1614 with 180 Japanese "tourists" bound for Mexico.

Viscaino made the maps of California that were used by other explorers.Viscaino is also remembered because of the places he named that are still the same today, such as San Diego. The innacurate discriptions also represent Viscaino.
