Diversity in the Classroom
Alexis Fritch
Through this lesson, I want to teach students what diversity means. I want for students to know it’s okay to be different and that is what makes each person unique from the other. Having a strong knowledge on this topic will prepare students to be better citizens. I believe it is important to teach students about diversity so they can have a better understanding of other cultures and social groups they will encounter in their life.
This lesson will take approx. 30 min-45min
Diversity- "the practice or quality of including or involving people from a range of different social and ethnic backgrounds and of different genders, sexual orientations, etc."
Unique- "being the only one of its kind; unlike anything else."
Race- "race is a grouping of people based on their shared physical or social qualities."
Appearance-"the way something or someone looks."
Disability-"a physical or mental condition that limits a person's movements, senses, or activities"
I will begin the lesson with a writing prompt:
" Do you know what the word diversity means? If not, write down what you think it may be. It's okay if you are unsure, we will discuss what it means afterward!"
*Students will grab their writing journals and have 5 minutes to write down their thoughts about the word "diversity."
• Students will understand the meaning of diversity and will be able to explain what it means to them
• Students will understand the importance of being different and unique from others
• Students will appreciate what makes them different from their peers

After the five minutes is up, students will turn to their seat partners and share their ideas and thought about diversity.
As a warm-up activity, I will ask students if they have ever heard of "diversity" before. I will then have them write in their journals what they know about the subject or what they think it means.
Step 1
Go through powerpoint presentation to learn about important vocabulary. Allow for questions and small discussions with the class as a whole or in small groups.
The presentation will include:
Book read aloud: Its Okay to be Different by Todd Parr
Students will watch the read aloud about what what makes people different and how it is okay. After listening to the book, students will write down five things that make them unique/different. This will be used next in the assessment activity.

I enjoyed reading through this article because it gives lots of information on how to incorporate diversity in the classroom and why it is so important. It explains that teaching diversity is important because it create more open-minded students, better understanding of other people/lessons, and prepares for diverse school or work settings.

This article provides four specific ways on how to help students in your classroom embrace diversity. It's important that educators encourage this when possible because school may be the only place they learn about diversity. One of the ways is to show student multicultural role models. Students can be heavily influenced by "famous" people and this would be a great way to grab their attention.

This is another article with great information over why it is so important for current and aspiring teachers to incorporate diversity curriculum into their classrooms. I will use this website as a resource in the future because it provides lots of other links to websites I could use in lessons. One is a virtual field trip to other counties, which would be really fun for students to utilize.
