The Soldier - Rupert Brooke

Background

Rupert Brooke, born in 1887 was known for his idealistic war sonnets written before and during the First World War. Although he did serve in the armed forces for a short time during WW1, he didn’t see any action as he developed sepsis and died after being bitten by a mosquito in 1915. The Soldier was actually written before the outbreak of WW1 and this is possibly the reason why it retains a romantic and idealistic view of war that is absent from other war poetry.

Did you know?

Brooke's poem is often read at war memorial services as it presents a soldier's sacrifice as selfless and heroic.
