For my project I choose to talk about how people are being judged by their appearance. Through my project, I talk about the connections between the articles and "The Outsiders", how they relate to eachother, and evidence supporting the similarities I chose.
Article #1
Article 1 Name: “You Are Judged by Your Appearance”
In the article, “You Are Judged by Your Appearance” by Forbes, they talk about how people everyday are judged by their appearance and other things as well. Some of these other things include, how they do their job, their groups/friendships, similar hobbies, similar backgrounds, etc.. I think this article relates to the text because just like the article states, some people judge others based off their appearance. Sometimes to people, appearance even defines what friend group you are in, your friendships, your jobs, your money, etc.. One way I think this is shown in the Outsiders, is how the Socs and the Greasers are put into their friend groups based off their appearance. One place where I saw this in the text was in chapter 1 on page 3 when it states, “We wear our hair long and dress in blue jeans and T-shirts, or leave our shirttails out and wear leather jackets and tennis shoes or boots. I'm not saying that either Socs or Greasers are better; that's just the way things are.” Reading this, I noticed the way you dress defines what social group you belong to and it shows group identity. And this is showed in the Outsiders between the Socs and the Greasers.
In the article, “How we Are Judged by Our Appearance”, they talk about how it is difficult for people to ignore a person’s appearance when making a social judgement. I think this relates to the Outsiders because just like in the article, people also made social judgements based on the Greasers appearance. I noticed this when people would look at their hair and the clothes they wore and just quickly assumes that the Greasers were poor. They also thought all the Greasers were the same by the way they looked and thought they were all tough and troublemakers which is inaccurate since they were all different and all had their own personality. One place in the text where I saw a connection to this, is on page 14 in chapter 1 when it states, “They were the only kind of girls that would look at us, I thought. Tough, loud girls who wore too much eye makeup and giggled and swore too much.” I think this shows how Ponyboy was judging the girls by their appearance while making a social judgement on how those girls are different from the Soc girls.

Some people are judged on facial appearance by others. People believe it is difficult for us to ignore a person’s appearance when making a social judgement, when saying appearance people are not only speaking of the “beauty” dimension, but also of many other qualities of one’s appearance.

Article 3 Name: “We Need To Stop Judging People Based On Their Looks”

First impressions are based on how someone looks, and people often comment on the appearances of others. Judgements on how a person is shouldn’t be controlled by how they look, they know if they weigh too much or too little, have bad acne, or have crooked teeth, there is no need to point these things out to them. How someone looks on the outside doesn’t determine their worth; it’s what’s on the inside that counts
I think this article relates to the Outsiders because just like in the article how it states that everyone has a first impression or their own thinking of each person, the Greasers and Socials also have their impressions of each other. Both the Greasers and the Socials, think about each other differently and they all have a first impression of each other. One example of where I noticed this in the Outsiders is when it states on page 15 in chapter 1, “I wondered what other girls were like. The girls who were bright-eyed and had their dresses a decent length and acted as if they’d like to spit on us if given a chance.” This shows Ponyboys impressions and thoughts on other girls and this shows how everyone thinks something of the appearance of others.
In conclusion, this is how my topic people being judged by their appearance, relates to both the book "The Outsiders", and the three articles. These three articles being, "You Are Judged by Your Appearance”, “How we Are Judged by Our Appearance”, and “We Need To Stop Judging People Based On Their Looks". I hope after reading this you noticed that you should not judge people by their appearance or by what others opinions are of them.
