ELL Parent Invlovement Advocacy Plan

Rationale:

Parents help build the foundation for learning in all students. Home is a child's first educational classroom. Children learn, shape, and grow with family support. This plan is designed to facilitate an avocacy plan for English Language Learners and their families.

Who's involved? What is his/her role?

  • Parents- caregivers who provide love and support for the student
  • Guidance Counselor- personel that provides that in school support both academically and emotionally. Acts as an educational liason between school and home.
  • Teachers- personel that will provide instruction and assessment to meet the needs of the individual learner.
  • Administators/Principal- personel who oversees the transition process to ensure all parties are active in the advocacy plan.

  • Isolate the issue, and correct the isolated concern. with the goal of identifying concerns in your immediate environment and gaining insights about broader, external factors.
  • Work with your allies. We are all working as a team for the best educational environment for the ELL.
  • Have a clear understanding of the laws and policies that are in place for the ELL.

  • On December 10, 2015, President Obama signed the bipartisan Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA), which reauthorizes the Elementary and Secondary Education Act of 1965. The U.S. Department of Education offers guidance on transitioning to the new law in this series of FAQs, published in Feburary of 2016.

Enrollment Process

All enrolling students must provide:

  • immunizations records
  • Two Verifications of a Local Address (Bills, bank statement)
  • Proof of Birth (Birth Certificate, Passport, Baptismal Certificate)
  • If available, any school records from your country or previous American school district

*All forms and documentation can be delivered to the enrolling elementary school office.

Transportation will be provided for all students living within the school district limits.

Student's daily needs:

  • Upon arrival ELL students will be paired with a Student Ambassador, who will give the student a tour of the building, classroom, and will spend the day with the new student to ensure a smooth entrance to school.
  • School Ambassadors will assist ELL with obtaining a lunch number and bus number, making sure that the basic needs of the student are met.
  • School Ambassadors will check in with the ELL's homeroom teacher for the first week upon arrival to ease the transition.
  • If further assisstance is needed from the School Ambassador the team will make such accomodations.

Enrollement Cont:

  • Upon arrival we will administer a test to determine your child's WIDA English Proficency level.
  • From there we will meet as a team to develop an appropriate educational plan for the student.

Being Proactive:

The educational team will meet quarterly to evaluate how the student is transitioning. If the team decides changes are needed the team will do so and implement changes accordingly.
