Introduction

The forms of entertainment have changed significantly from the Roman Empire, but some key ideas have stayed true. This presentation aims to explain the similarities and differences between the forms of entertainment in the Roman Empire and present day America as well as other areas of the world today.

Roman Empire

In 27 B.C. the Roman Empire was born, and with that, the Roman Games became an integral part of Roman life. The most known Roman game is the gladiator battles. In Rome, many people believed that dead people's souls could only be transported by human bloodshed. Due to this belief, people began to have slaves fight to the death at funerals. Interest rose in these battles and many people stopped to watch. Someone had the idea to charge people to watch the battles at the funerals. This was essentially how Roman men fighting to the death for entertainment became a popular form of entertainment.

Fun Facts

The Colosseum

The Colosseum is the idol of Rome. It began building in 72 AD. It was built to be the biggest amphitheater and held more than 50,000 people. The main goal was something called Bread and Circuses. Bread and Circuses was the idea that the Roman Empire gave people free bread and gave them access to shows to distract them from the bad things going on in Rome. The Colosseum finished its building in 80 AD which was amazing for its size.

  • During the first 10 days of the Colosseum over 2,000 people were killed

  • The Colosseum had a canvas ceiling to block the sun

  • It was active for over 500 years

  • The Colosseum suffered bombings, lootings, and earthquakes

  • The Colosseum was used as a cemetery, storefront, and church

  • The Colosseum has over 6 million visitors and is one of the 7 wonders of the world.

Gladiators

Slaves or people who lost their citizenship were recruited and trained to become professional fighters for entertainment. They carried long rectangular shields, straight swords, and helmets. The Romans also discovered it was more exciting to watch them fight with other weapons or opponents, such as animals. The

Gladiators would begin by drawing their opponent and then begin fighting. The fight was very crowd motivated. The crowd would ultimately choose the fate of the gladiator depending on how well they fought in the match. Some gladiators were spared if they displayed bravery and courage while others were killed for their cowardice. To keep people entertained the Emporer was constantly trying to keep the games exciting and new to distract from other things going on.

Present-Day

Present-day Entertainment

In the present day, there are many options for entertainment. In America and other countries, the biggest forms of entertainment according to BusinessTech are gambling, video games, TV subscriptions, reading, and movies and music. There are also many public forms of entertainment that people love to do. Sporting events, concerts, shopping, and movies are all public events that are really popular.

There are many big companies that try and rule the entertainment space. Some of these companies are Walt Disney, Netflix, Paramount, and Nintendo. Most entertainment companies choose to have headquarters in the U.S., China, and Japan.

Present-Day Rome

Rome is very different today than in previous times. When visiting Rome, gladiator fights are no longer the thing to do. Instead, people like to visit art museums, and ancient Roman artifacts, enjoy nature, and eat food. Rome is a very beautiful old city that tourist love to visit. The Colosseum is still a main attraction to visit but no fighting or killing will be taking place. Rome is truly an amazing place and somewhere I would love to visit.

Technology

In present times, technology has made its way into almost every area of life. Especially, entertainment. Almost every form of entertainment includes technology. From scoreboards to screens and videos, technology is all around us in entertainment. I believe technology in these spaces is a good thing. Games and concerts are now able to be streamed worldwide with the help of technology. It also helps the world become closer because we are able to watch games across the globe. For example in 2020, more than 436 million people paid for some form of digital streaming. Things are more accessible than ever and for entertainment, I believe that is an amazing thing.
