Behavioral Systems Theory

The Theory

  • First proposed in 1968

  • “The efficient and effective behavioral functioning in the patient to prevent illness”

  • research-based knowledge from the effect of nursing care on patients

Four Concepts

Major Concepts

1. Humans have two major systems

Biological: role of medicine

Behavioral: role of nursing

2. The patient's behavior is directly influenced by the environment and events that occur in the environment. (metaparadigm)

3. Health is an adaptive response to internal and external stimuli in order to maintain stability and control.

4. Equilibrium

Assumptions in the Theory

1. System

2. Structure

3. Functions

Three Main Categories

Each category has four assumptions

The Subsystems

Attachment/Affiliative - Serves the need for security through social inclusion or intimacy

Dependency - Behaviors desired to get attention, recognition, and physical assistance

Ingestive - Fulfills the need to supply the biologic requirements for foods and fluids

Eliminative - Functions to excrete wastes

Sexual - Serves the biologic requirements of procreation and reproduction

Aggressive - Functions in self and social protection and preservation

Achievement - Functions to master and control the self or the environment

Assessment & Diagnosis

Nursing Process

Assessment

  • Stems from the seven subsystems of the behavioral theory
  • Focuses more on the behavioral aspect of a client as opposed to the biological

Diagnosis

  • Developed if an imbalance occurs to one or more of the subsystems

Nursing Process

Plan

Implementation

Evaluation

Plan

  • Helps bring imbalances to any of the subsystems back into balance

Implementation

  • Actions taken to treat diagnosis (imbalances)

Evaluation

  • Has a balance of all seven subsystems been achieved

Case Study

Sheela,a 30 year-old mother of four, is experiencing signs and symptoms of postpartum depression a month after giving birth to her fourth child. Signs and symptoms were left untreated resulting in a death of septic shock.

(refer to case study handout)

Discussion Questions

Discussion

1. What are some things that could have been done to prevent Sheela’s situation?

2. Name the three subsystems that would be a major concern for Sheela.

3. As a nurse, how would you help Sheela reach an equilibrium?
