Excerpt From "My Name"

In English my name means hope. In Spanish it means too many letters. It means sadness,

it means waiting. It is like the number nine. A muddy color. It is the Mexican records my

father plays on Sunday mornings when he is shaving, songs like sobbing.

The central character of “my name” is esperanza esperanza is given indirect characterization such as insecure and uneasy we know this because in the short story esperanza is insecure about her name because she does not like the meaning behind it although esperanza means waiting, her thinking this reflects her insecurities as we know esperanza also means hope in spanish, she's uneasy due to the fact that she worries about living the same life her grandmother had lived making her unable to live how she wants.

My name is a excerpt from the novel The House On Mango Street. The excerpt is about a girl and how shes hates her name due to the fact that its passed from her Grandma and she believes the name is a curse instead of a giving. as in the text it says "I have inherited her name, but I don't want to inherit her place by the window." She believes she will live the same fate as her grandma did, Her grandmas freedom was taken from her by her Husband and was seen staring out of the window at times reminicing over the life she had before. Ezperanza thinks the name means to wait and hates the way people pronounce it. While also calling her sisters name magdalena ugly. At the end of the excerpt Ezperanza mentions the want, of changing her name.

Sandra Cisneros was born in Chicago, Illinois on December 20, 1954. Sandra began writing when she was 10 years old writing her first poem. after her time in school was done she became a teacher who helped dropout students. Her most famous piece of work is "The House On Mango street" where she would go on to win many presitigious awards(such as the national medal: presented by Barrack Obama) and many more.
