New born chicks stays tan and brown striped until it isaround 6 months old, after that the chicks become Juvenile. In this stage they lose their stripes and become a plain brown. As they develop they're feathers darken, they're necks become blue and the wattle and casque begins to grow. This is classed as Sub-adult. Cassowary become fully matured at 3 years of age. Theygrow up to 2 metres tall, possibly bigger. They typically weigh around 55kg if male and 76kg if female.
Cassowaries start to breed from 3-3.5 years of age. Breeding season is June-October or Winter and Spring, though there is cases of breeding outside of the season. Once two cassowaries breed the female will leave the male with the eggs and proceed to breed with other males. The female leaves a clutch of 4 eggs alongside a row of plants with the male. Cassowaries don't have nests, however the males will brings plants over to surround the eggs.
The life span of wild Cassowaries is unfortunately unknown, however in captivity the average is 60. The oldest Cassowary known to date is a Southern Cassowary from Healsville Sanctuary, Victoria who lived to 61.
